About Stan Lowrance DDS, FAGD
Ask Rockwall Dentist, Dr. Stan Lowrance who he considers his primary mentor and he doesn’t think twice. It was his Dad. A thirty-four year educator, school administrator and life changing coach, he lived out many virtues in front of his young son—not the least of which was a lifelong love of learning. “As I was growing up, my dad was working toward his masters, then his doctorate,” Dr. Stan tells. It was normal for us to sit eating dinner with Dad studying a book at the table. He taught me that learning was a part of being alive, a part of living your life to the fullest.”
This lesson has served Dr. Stan well. Although his dental practice is one of the oldest and most successful in the Greater Rockwall area, he’s constantly improving his services, pioneering new technology and voraciously seeking more knowledge about his dental profession. It was this quest for knowledge that earned him a respected Fellowship in the Academy of General Dentistry after obtaining 1500 hours of continuing education.
For his patients, this has meant access to the very latest dental technology, like decay-disclosing digital X-rays that take all the guess work out of diagnosing tooth decay. “New software developed by Kodak allows a computer to scan the teeth, showing the earliest stages of decalcification often before decay has begun,” he said. “This allows us to treat a problem before it’s begun to compromise the tooth, making treatment far less invasive and much more successful.
Considering his own early experience, dentistry wasn’t a natural career choice for Dr. Stan Lowrance. “I hated going to the dentist as a kid,” he remembered. “It was scary. There was so much fear of the unknown. As a kid, I remember being held down in the dental chair and being aware that something horrible was happening to me.”
Then Dr. Stan met someone. “He was this really nice guy who just happened to be a dentist,” he said. “He took time to answer my questions, explain what he was going to do and why. I realized that going to the dentist didn’t have to be a frightening experience.”
He never forgot the contrast. “When I see someone who’s nervous, or even scared the way I was, it’s time for me to stop and get to know them,” he said. “I allow a minimum of an hour for every new patient. Part of that time is spent chatting, addressing any fears, questions or concerns they have. I never want anyone—of any age—to feel the way I did at the dentist as a kid.”
That might explain why Dr. Stan has patients who travel to see him from San Antonio, Arkansas, Oklahoma and even farther. “I’ve offered to find these patients a dentist in their new location,” he laughed. “But they come back to see me. One of my patients has moved to the Caribbean, another to Paris, France. When they come home for a visit, they allow part of that time for a check-up and cleaning.”
On a recent weekday, Dr. Stan treated an entire family. “They were in town for a family gathering and arranged to stay an extra day so each one could come in for their check up. It was great fun! Parents come in and tell their kids, ‘Dr. Lowrance was my first dentist. Now he’ll be your first dentist.’ It’s hard to believe I’ve been at this so long. One of my greatest joys has been treating five different generations of the same family.”
